Young Horse Development
Laying the foundation for a confident, capable athlete.
Our Young Horse Program is designed to nurture and develop future stars with intention, consistency, and care. From halter-breaking to first rides, we tailor our approach to each stage of growth — helping your young horse mature physically, mentally, and emotionally in a way that sets them up for long-term success in the show ring and beyond.
We offer age-specific programs for each phase:
Weanling through 2-Year-Old Year
A gentle, progressive introduction to handling, movement, and socialization. Young horses are field boarded in small herds to encourage healthy development and natural behaviors. Training includes:
- Halter breaking and respectful handling
- Exposure to grooming tools, ear/tail/leg handling, and dental checks
- Leading away from the herd, tying, small-group groundwork
- Free jumping and advanced foal training, as appropriate
Includes grass hay/pasture, basic grain, and vet/farrier handling to a reasonable and safe extent.
3-Year-Old Year
Focused on groundwork, manners, and light intro to under-saddle work. Horses remain on field board if possible, preferably in a herd, and begin more structured sessions 3 days per week:
- Lunging and liberty work
- Behavior and body awareness
- Free jumping
- Backing under saddle may begin late in the year, depending on maturity
Includes hay, grain, and handling for vet/farrier.
4-Year-Old Year
This is where a young athlete begins to become a working partner. Horses move into a more structured schedule (4 work days/week) and begin part-time stall living, lunging sessions, and regular work under saddle.
- Pro rides, groundwork, lunging, trail rides, and lessons as appropriate
- Introduction to clippers and increased barn life exposure
- Consistent training that balances progress with downtime — 3 “off days” per week are built in to allow for mental and physical rest
Schedule may be adjusted at the trainer’s discretion based on the horse’s needs and progress.
Note on Colts:
Ungelded colts over 1 year of age will incur an additional $250/month (or more) to support the additional time and training required to safely develop respectful, well-mannered stallions.
